How to Start a Business

If you already decided on the type of business to start, the next thing you need to start a business is  a client base.  You can get clients from advertising and and marketing.

Then, you need to choose a business entity:

There are  advantages and disadvantages of sole proprietorship, partnership and corporation.  However, if you  have decided that there is a business you are ready to operate and you know there is a market for this type of business (clients), don't think about it too much... just go ahead and

  • First: Get a Fictitious Business Name Statement, or Incorporate.  You cannot lose either way you go because you need to get a fictitious business name so you can open a bank account... remember... you cannot get a merchant account till you get a fictitious business name  for your business or incorporate.

  •  Second: Get a Federal Employer Number  FEIN  or  Federal Tax Id,

  •   ( you need it if you have a corporation, have employees or you don't want to use your social to open a bank account.

  • Third, in California, you need a  State Tax Id: EIN Employer ID, only if you will pay any employee more than $100 per business quarter.

  • A Resale License, Seller's Permit, or Sales Tax Certification, ( you need this if you buy wholesale or you sell retail - in short, you don't pay taxes when buying wholesale, and you pay it when you sell retail and you charge taxes  - you don't need this if you don't buy or sell taxable products) and a

  • A  Business License:  All businesses need a business license.
